raise the cup and let's propose a toast (365-85 and contest winner!)

Day 85 of 365: a year in songs and photos
Song: Faith No More, Last Cup of Sorrow

I know I skipped the last two days, I’ll get back to them eventually. I’m all discombobulated now.

So it’s about time I announce a winner to the contest, eh?

I took a very surprising amount of photos. Surprising for me, at least. Most people, knowing my penchant for shooting anything and everything and for shooting in continuous mode, guessed upwards of 3,000. Myself, I would have guessed closer to 4,000.

But something interesting happened on this trip. At some point, photo taking became secondary to having fun. I was having such a good time that there were whole hours when I didn’t even take the camera out of the bag! I was so relaxed, so attuned to the stress and weariness being released from my body and mind that I just kicked back and let the pleasantness of being away overtake me. I stopped seeing everything as a potential photo op and instead just concentrated on enjoying the hell out of the vacation and the company.

All told, I took 1,228 photos (about 100 of which will go up on flickr). Which means, the winner of the above pictured Genuine, Authentic Sacramento Shot Glass Bought In Old Sacramento (liquor not included, hearts sold separately) goes to………

Wait….addendum here. I know I said “without going over” but being that we all (self included) overestimated my photo taking, I have to scratch that. So the shot glass goes to…

The Savvy Savorer, who guessed 1400.

Congratulations. I’ll be in contact about getting the shot glass to you.

california, here we come

Day 76 of A year in songs and photos

Song: Phantom Planet, California

I figured I’d get this last post up here now, as I’ll be pretty busy after work today getting ready and we have to drop the pup off at my cousin’s tonight (goodbyes are so hard!). We leave at 6am tomorrow for the airport.

How obsessive am I about things? I packed a memo pad and pen in my camera bag so I can take notes each day on what photos I may use for the 365 project when I get back. Obviously, I won’t be posting when I’m away, but when I return I’m going to have to make up for the missed days and post almost a week’s worth at once.

It’s not too late to enter my How Many Photos Will Michele Take in California contest!

See you next week!

CONTEST! WIN FABULOUS PRIZES! (updated)

a contest! win a fabulous prize!

Here’s the deal. I got to talking with Todd about how many photos I will take while in California. Considering I took 714 at ONE hockey game, the amount will be considerable. He suggested a contest. So,here it is.

I’m leaving on the morning of the 16th and coming back on the 22nd. So we’ll say, officially, how many photos I will take on the vacation total, meaning from the time I get on the plane, to the time I get off the plane at JFK on the night of the 22nd.

You can leave your guesses here, I’ll also be doing this on my flickr page. Whoever comes closest without going over (sorry, that’s the Bob Barker in me) wins something. Not sure yet, but whatever it is, it will be brought back from the Land of Infinite Sunshine or whatever you Californians call that place.

Update: Since people have asked, I will be in Sacramento for most of the trip, with one day in San Francisco (no Alcatraz). We are NOT doing the usual touristy things as we are visiting with Todd’s family and friends. But, keep in mind that I never really take photos of the usual stuff. And Sacramento has lots of vintage and neon signs, which I’m a fan of. I’m using a 4 gig card, and I will most likely buy another of those before I leave. I think that’s enough to go on.

You know that we have been working hard on our Halloween window display. We keep referring to it as Spookytown, because that’s the product name for all the stuff we have been buying.

st3

We don’t like calling it Spookytown. We want a name of our own. Something that says “Michele and Todd put this together.” Something less cartoony than Spookytown. Something…..good.

That’s where you come in. That’s right, this is a NAME THAT HALLOWEEN DISPLAY contest.

The display can be seen here in all its glory.

There are various angles and shots and whatnot so you can get a real feel for it. There’s also a shaky video of it here.

We do have a glorious prize for whoever comes up with the name we use. If you look at the display, you’ll see our Lake O’ Death. In that Lake O’ Death is a half-drowned school bus with an arm sticking out of the back window. That’s right. You win the school bus fresh from our display. When Halloween’s over, of course. Just imagine. For naming our little creepy village, you get to have a piece of it!! Does it get much better than that?

The entries will be judged by Todd, myself and my kids. Winner will be announced in a couple of days.

Leave your name suggestions here in the comments. You may enter as many times as you want. We’ll leave this open a day or two.
